Recently, I was invited, along with several other Boston area bloggers, to Lincoln Tavern & Restaurant in South Boston to try out its Brunch Test Kitchen. Held every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 10 AM to 3 PM, Brunch Test Kitchen features a rotating menu of Lincoln Tavern favorites, as well as new items the chefs are trying out.

Bucket of Bubbles

I’m officially a suburban resident these days, so a trip into the city for a meal is a BIG.DEAL. There’s the drive in and parking to contend with (who wants to try to parallel park in New England in the winter?!), so I have a high bar for Boston restaurants. Give me great grub, excellent service, a memorable atmosphere. Lincoln Tavern scores on all of these points.  Friends, the food was delicious! So good, in fact, that I am trying to figure out when to go back.

Lincoln Tavern serves American food. Most brunch and lunch dishes are under or around $15, and dinner dishes range in price, with the highest item at $20. The Tavern is also open until 1 AM for those looking for late night grub. The restaurant has a long bar, high ceilings, exposed brick, and plenty of booths (my favorite) to enjoy yummy food and drinks. The vibe was laid-back and fun, a place to see friends and have a good time.

At the Brunch Test Kitchen, we tried a number of dishes including Fruity Pebbles pancakes with cereal milk anglaise (it tastes exactly like the cereal), Shrimp & Grits (so good I didn’t even share it with anyone), and breakfast pizzas (pizza + breakfast = get in my belly!). My kids couldn’t get over the Fruity Pebbles pancakes when I showed them photos afterward. “When can we go there, Mama?” they asked, their eyes round and dancing with visions of cereal flakes. I’m a savory breakfast person myself, though I do make exceptions for champagne, and Lincoln Tavern delivers here, offering a Bucket of Bubbles. This item is a bottle of champagne with different juices—peach, orange, and apple cider, the day I was there—to make your own cocktails. Delish.

Once you have kids, its hard to make time for things like leisurely brunches, so I was pleased to see that Lincoln Tavern offers a diverse—from sandwiches to entrees—dinner menu that would be a draw for an evening out on the town. Perhaps instead of bringing the kids here for brunch, I’ll go back to Lincoln Tavern for date night with my husband! Now, I just need to get a babysitter….
