Wordful Wednesday: From the Archives

Sweet, isn’t it? That’s my mom, second from the left, and her sister, brothers, and mother. I think it’s from the early 1950s. I wonder why they are all dressed up. What are they celebrating? Is my grandfather standing off to the side taking the photo? Why isn’t my mom smiling?

I love finding old photos like this one. The Type A in me wants everything organized and labeled (Easter 1970, Summer Vacation 1986), but the part of me that’s open to uncertainty (she’s there; just super small) loves stumbling into a mess of pictures and wondering. Why? What? Who? Since everything is digital now, can one really find a box of pictures in the back of the closet? Will the wonder still be there?
While there is perhaps a province in which the photograph
can tell us nothing more than what we see with our own eyes,
there is another in which it proves to us how little our eyes permit us to see.
